Assistant Controller

 ABOUT CHABERTON:

Founded in 2020 and headquartered in the greater Washington, D.C., area, Chaberton Energy is a public benefit corporation focused on developing sustainable infrastructure and renewable energy projects. We focus on developing small to mid-sized solar power facilities (<10 MW) both for our own portfolio and on behalf of third parties. Chaberton has more than 140 solar projects under site control and a growing development pipeline of 1.5 gigawatts of opportunities under assessment or negotiation. ROLE OVERVIEW:

The Assistant Controller will be responsible for managing the day-to-day accounting and contributing to the overall growth and success of Chaberton Energy. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in maintaining the company’s accounting records and producing consolidated financial statements using NetSuite.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Preparation of GAAP consolidated financial statements, ensuring accuracy and adherence to accounting standards across multiple entities.
  • Manage the month-end closing process, including reconciliation of accounts, entries, and financial reporting to ensure timely and accurate closing of the books.
  • Assist with annual audit preparation and oversight of independent auditor.
  • Administer payroll and manage 401(k) contributions, ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations, and processing payments accurately and on time.
  • Perform due diligence, payment tracking, and provide deliverables to support project and corporate transactions. other financial deliverables to support project and corporate transactions.
  • Train and supervise staff as needed, providing guidance, mentoring, and performance management to ensure team effectiveness and development.
  • Prepare and deliver routine and ad hoc reports as required, responding to the needs of management and stakeholders with timely and insightful financial analysis.

 

General:

  • Identify issues, conduct data-driven analyses, recommend, and implement approved solutions to ensure accurate accounting.
  • Improve and advance accounting process workflows; promote excellence in execution of process among team members and broader organization.
  • Adapt and revise critical pathways based upon critical path analyses to improve schedule outcomes and work through direct reports to implement solutions.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, or a related field.
  • Minimum 5+ years of experience in an accounting role.
  • Must have GAAP knowledge including consolidations, variable interest entities, and stock compensation.
  • Attention to detail and organized.
  • 2+ years of NetSuite experience (strongly preferred) or demonstrated ability to learn it quickly.
  • Proficiency in using Microsoft Office or similar programs.
  • Strong communication. Able to summarize complex issues and convey information effectively.
  • Resourceful, curious, and proactive problem-solving attitude.
  • Able to collaborate with multiple disciplines including sales, engineering, project development, and project origination.
  • Strong work ethic / desire to accomplish assigned tasks in a timely manner and meet / exceed milestones.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in accounting, or a related field.
  • 3+ years of experience in accounting manager role
  • Active CPA License
  • Experience in renewable energy, real estate/greenfield development, and/or asset management companies a plus

 

ROLE LOGISTICS:

  • Full-Time
  • Hybrid from your home office with at least 3 workdays/week at the Chaberton Energy HQ in Rockville, MD.
  • During the initial 30-day training period, additional in-office days (up to 4-5 days/week) may be required.
  • Minimal travel; expected <15% of the time.

Manager, Project Development

ROLE OVERVIEW:

We are looking for an exceptional Project Development Manager to join our development team. The ideal candidate would bring relevant experience and a structured, yet entrepreneurial, approach to managing projects assigned in both pre-construction and construction phases for Chaberton’s growing portfolio of distributed generation solar assets.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Evaluate assigned project markets and employ strategic action to advance the development of assigned projects.
  • Conduct analysis of projects to maximize solar productivity and investment returns.
  • Coordinate and lead outside vendors including bidding, contracting, and reviewing deliverables.
  • Identify issues, conduct analysis, recommend, and implement approved solutions to ensure project delivery.
  • Audit and maintain project plans, including schedule and budget. Conduct critical path analysis. Propose and implement solutions to improve schedule outcomes.
  • Work independently, with the project team, and with outside parties such as landowners, public agencies, equipment vendors, contractors, etc.
  • Support commercial and marketing efforts for assigned projects.
  • Prepare presentations for project reviews and decision-making meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS (ASSOCIATE MANAGER):

  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical field or comparable experience.
  • At least 3 years’ experience in project engineering or project management role.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills. Able to summarize complex issues and convey information effectively.
  • Able to review and interpret technical documents and construction drawings.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Resourceful, curious, and proactive problem-solving attitude.
  • Able to collaborate with multiple disciplines including sales, engineering, permitting, and project origination.
  • Strong work ethic / desire to accomplish assigned tasks in a timely manner and meet / exceed milestones.
  • Ability to travel routinely to include site supervision (as Owner’s representative).

 

ADDITIONAL REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS (MANAGER):

  • Master’s degree in relevant field or 5 years’ direct, relevant professional experience
  • Direct construction or pre-construction Solar project management experience
  • Experience with Google Earth, GIS tools, PVSyst, PVWatts, Helioscope, and other solar industry engineering tools.
  • Experience implementing or improving project management processes.

 

Compensation considered based on experience. Remote locations may be considered, however, strong preference for individual to be located in either the Washington, DC metro areas, or Mid-West.

ROLE OVERVIEW:

We are looking for an exceptional Manager of Development to join our land origination team. The ideal candidate would bring relevant experience and a structured, yet entrepreneurial, approach to supporting our origination efforts to develop a pipeline of high-quality projects in select markets. We will also consider associate manager candidates that have the drive to grow into a manager level position.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Research, identify, and deliver solar origination strategies in assigned markets.
  • Lead site selection activities for new solar projects.
  • Identify and evaluate suitable properties and solicit interest from landowners.
  • Negotiate, analyze, draft, revise, and acquire leases and other land related contracts pertaining to surface use and real estate with landowners and their attorneys.
  • Proactively monitor policy activities at the state, county, and local level.
  • Identify adjacent project opportunities within existing markets.
  • Research, audit, and interpret land records and perform real estate title due diligence.
  • Assist with research, compilation, and preparation of assigned special projects: request for proposals, national policy, and acquisitions.
  • Work closely with the broader Chaberton team to support development of existing projects.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Undergraduate Degree from an accredited institution or equivalent experience.
  • 3-5 years relevant full-time project management work experience.
  • Ability to manage, administer, and understand contracts and records.
  • Excellent communication, strong negotiation and organizational skills, commercial agility, with high level of attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member; innovative mindset to operate as an important contributor within a fast-paced environment.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 3-5 years of full-time work experience in energy development and/or renewable energy project management.
  • Demonstrated ability to originate and lead real estate agreements for renewable energy projects (e.g. site leases, property purchases, etc.).
  • Staff and land contractor management experience.
  • 1+ years experience using SalesForce.
  • Working knowledge of US solar energy markets and strong network in the industry.
  • Ability to influence policy and legislation at the local or state level.

ROLE OVERVIEW:

The Corporate Development and Finance Manager will be responsible for driving financial analyses, supporting project finance activities, and contributing to the overall growth and success of Chaberton Energy. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record tax equity and project finance modeling, interpreting market data, adapting financial models to dynamic conditions, and clearly communicating financial insights to key stakeholders.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Engage in end-to-end project finance and tax equity initiatives, including structuring, financial modeling, execution and closing activities for sell side, buy side, B2B, and joint venture transactions.
  • Organize competitive offers and support negotiations of LOIs, MIPAs, and other transaction structures.
  • Develop and optimize project financial models to provide financial analytics for project selection and investment decision-making.
  • Collaborate with Chaberton’s Real Estate Origination, B2B, and Development teams to support efficient origination, development, optimization and expansion of high-quality project portfolios.
  • Conduct market research to monitor updates on revenue or cost drivers, evaluating their impact on project economics, and ensure the regular flow of information regarding project value drivers to the Development team.
  • Support in developing core and new market strategies; develop in-depth understanding of local and federal regulations, revenue stack, market challenges, etc. and ensure the knowledge flows to the Finance team and the broader Chaberton team.
  • Strategically improve the corporate pro-forma model to support the preparation of annual budgets and periodic corporate forecasting.
  • Influence management decision-making on ad-hoc corporate and strategic matters to enhance operational efficiency and processes, furthering Chaberton’s Creativity-Excellence-Humanity core value framework in day-to-day application.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Business, or a related field.
  • Minimum 2+ years of experience in project finance, M&A, or corporate finance.
  • Demonstrated success in financial analysis and modeling, with expertise in project finance principles, tax equity financing, and market research.
  • Proficiency in all MS Office programs, particularly Excel; Salesforce experience is a plus.
  • Strong communication skills. Able to summarize complex issues and convey information effectively.

  • Resourceful, curious, and proactive problem-solving attitude.
  • Able to collaborate with multiple disciplines including sales, engineering, construction, permitting, and project origination.

  • MBA or Master’s degree in Finance with a concentration in Sustainability or Energy, or a related field.
  • 3+ years of experience in project finance, M&A, or corporate finance, ideally at an investment bank or PE firm.
  • 1+ years of buy/sell side transaction experience in Distributed Generation or Community Solar project financing.
