Job Description

With the backing of Greenbacker Capital, a leading sustainable energy and infrastructure investor, at Chaberton Energy we are building a company to accelerate the development of locally rooted renewable energy projects in the Mid-Atlantic and nationally. We are focused on small to mid-sized solar power facilities (<20 MW) and develop projects from inception to full operations.  Our vision for company culture is based first and foremost on stakeholder relationships rooted in trust and honesty, working as a close-knit team, and a genuine passion for pushing forward the renewable energy revolution.

We are looking for an exceptional individual, with an entrepreneurial attitude, project development experience, and commercial skills, for the position of Chief Commercial Officer.  This person will hold a key leadership position in the company, overseeing a team of 10+ professionals, and being part of the executive team, with significant career growth potential.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead land origination and commercial development teams
    • Originate sites across existing Chaberton markets for community solar projects
    • Develop relationships and secure high-value projects with C&I/MUSH customers
  • Spearhead the development of new geographic markets and/or verticals
    • Identify and analyze new market opportunities
    • Develop market entry plans and execute accordingly
  • Take the role of business owner and project champion for key strategic projects
  • Raise company profile
    • Reinforce Chaberton’s presence in the marketplace
    • Participate and speak at conferences
  • Support key corporate transactions
  • Develop teams, support company culture, and recruit new team members
  • Jump in as needed, working alongside all members of the organization

 

Key Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in relevant engineering, science, or management discipline.
  • At least 10 years of experience in project development (Energy & Environment, with a preference for solar project experience), with a successful track record originating projects, closing sales, negotiating land agreements, securing discretionary permits and interconnection capacity, and closing project financing.
  • Strong communication, presentation, and negotiation skills. World-class analytical skills.
  • Entrepreneurial, resourceful, curious, and problem-solving attitude. Able to summarize complex issues and convey information effectively.
  • Experience managing teams of >5 professionals.
  • Comfortable working in an unstructured environment, creating opportunities where others may not see them, and able to collaborate with multiple disciplines including finance, engineering, construction, operations, and project origination. Ability and interest to take on a variety of tasks and jump in as needed.
  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 30% of time to support projects and attend meetings and conferences.
  • Business development experience in the energy sector (preferably renewables) and strong professional network. High energy, self-starting attitude and ability to thrive within a team environment.
  • Strong work ethic, organizational skills, attention to process, and ability to accomplish assignments in a timely manner.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in strategy/management consulting a plus.
  • MBA or other relevant Master’s degree a strong plus.

 

Compensation will be competitive, commensurate with experience, and will include very significant upside potential, and share options.  Preferred location is North Bethesda, MD, but will consider remote locations.

Job Description:

We are looking for an exceptional Director of Solar Development to join our team. The ideal candidate would bring relevant experience and a structured, yet entrepreneurial, approach to developing a pipeline of high-quality projects in select markets.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage multiple markets, origination staff, and land contractors
  • Lead community solar policy relationships in assigned markets at the state, county, and local level
  • Advocate for solar policies in key jurisdictions, developing relationship with key stakeholders
  • Develop strategies and market entry plans to enter into new markets
  • Lead site selection activities for new solar projects
  • Identify suitable properties and solicit interest from landowners
  • Negotiate real estate agreements with landowners
  • Negotiate, analyze, draft, revise, and acquire leases and other land related contracts pertaining to surface use and real estate with landowners and their attorneys
  • Research, analyze, and interpret land records and perform real estate title due diligence
  • Identify adjacent project opportunities within existing markets
  • Work closely with broader Chaberton team to support development of existing projects

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate Degree from an accredited institution or equivalent experience.
  • 3+ years direct experience in site origination.
  • Demonstrated ability to originate and lead real estate agreements for renewable energy projects (e.g. site leases, property purchases, etc.).
  • Thorough understanding of contract origination and commercial transaction structuring.
  • Knowledge of US energy markets.
  • Excellent communication, strong negotiation and organizational skills, commercial agility, with high level of attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member; innovative mindset to operate as an important contributor within a fast-paced environment.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree from an accredited institution or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in energy development, renewable energy, and/or management.
  • 3+ years direct experience in community solar development.
  • Staff and land contractor management experience.
  • Working knowledge of US solar energy markets and strong network in the industry.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence policy and legislation at the local, state, and federal level.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work with Chaberton engineering team to create and review high quality and optimized solar designs in a timely manner.
  • Advance the development of assigned projects to construction-ready status.
  • Lead interconnection application and study processes across portfolio.
  • Conduct “bankable” productivity modeling via PVSyst.
  • Implement and maintain solar/electrical design and performance testing standards.
  • Create constraints maps, site plans, and layouts (kmz, CAD).
  • Manage outside engineering consultants and contractors; including bidding, contracting, and reviewing deliverables.
  • Maintain relationships with key equipment vendors and contractors.
  • Identify and resolve issues related to technical design.
  • Create and maintain project plans, including schedule and budget.
  • Work independently, with the project team, and with outside parties such as landowners, public agencies, equipment vendors, contractors, etc.
  • Support commercial and marketing efforts for assigned projects.
  • Prepare presentations for project reviews and decision-making meetings.
  • Lead “long lead” procurement activities (these are normally restricted to long lead items such as transformers, certain other electrical equipment, and potentially solar panels)
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s in electrical engineering/similar degree, or comparable experience.
  • Engineer-in-Training designation or comparable experience
    • If relying on comparable experience for either of above, make this clear in your resume/cover letter
  • At least 3 years’ experience in renewable energy in either a project engineering or project management role
  • Successfully obtained interconnection approvals/interconnection agreements and reached COD on solar projects
    • list specific utility experience and role(s)
  • Proficiency modeling solar productivity using PVSyst to include effects of topography and other factors on shading; able to describe pros/cons to various layouts and how to optimize project value
  • Strong communication and presentation skills. Able to summarize complex issues and convey information effectively.
  • Able to create, review, and interpret technical documents and construction drawings.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Resourceful, curious, and proactive problem-solving attitude.
  • Able to collaborate with multiple disciplines including sales, engineering, permitting, and project origination.
  • Strong work ethic / desire to accomplish assigned tasks in a timely manner and meet / exceed milestones.
  • Proficient using autoCAD, Excel and MS Project (or similar).
  • Experience with solar industry engineering tools, such as: Google Earth, GIS tools, PVSyst, PVWatts, Helioscope, and autoCAD plug-ins
  • Ability to travel up to 20% of time.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Professional Engineer license, particularly in states with a community solar program
  • At least 5 years’ experience in solar industry
  • Experience implementing or improving solar project designs or project management processes.
  • Understand latest trends in solar/solar+storage design and implications for distributed generation.

 

Compensation considered based on experience. Remote locations may be considered, however, preference for individual to be located in the Washington (DC) metro areas or within 4-hour radius (e.g, Pittsburgh (PA), Richmond (VA)).
