Battery Storage Guide

Learn the
Benefits of
Battery Energy Storage Systems

Battery energy storage systems, also called BESS, help support reliable, more affordable electricity by storing power when prices are low and releasing it when demand—and pricing—is higher. These systems play an important role in managing changes in electricity use and supporting consistent grid operation.

BESS projects do not generate electricity. Instead, they store energy already on the grid and help make it available when it is most needed.

How Battery Energy Storage
Helps Your Community

Energy storage projects support local energy infrastructure by helping manage electricity supply and demand.

  • Grid resilience: Battery storage systems store electricity and deliver it during periods of higher demand or when other systems fail, helping stabilize grid operations.
  • Support for evolving energy needs: By responding to changes in electricity use, battery storage helps utilities manage demand more effectively, which also helps improve energy affordability.
  • Efficient use of land: Community-scale battery storage projects like the ones Chaberton develops use a compact footprint and are typically located near existing electrical infrastructure.
  • Chaberton Cares program: We reinvest in communities through our Chaberton Cares initiative, supporting local charities and causes.

Benefits to
Landowners

Leasing your land for a battery energy storage system (BESS) offers compelling advantages. In addition to requiring only a quarter of an acre up to 2 acres of property, BESS projects offer you:

Predictable Income for 17+ Years

Upon the start of battery project construction, receive predictable annual payments backed by a long-term contract.

No Maintenance on Your End

Once operational, the system runs automatically with professional maintenance handled by Chaberton and its partners, providing you with truly passive income.

Consideration for the Future of Your Land

When the project reaches the end of its life, our decommissioning process includes recycling of equipment components when available and restoration of your land.

What Landowners Can Expect When Working With Chaberton

Proven Track Record
Chaberton is an established distributed energy developer with a strong portfolio of successful projects across Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, New Jersey, California and other states. Our experience developing energy infrastructure, along with our two-time recognition as an Inc. 5000 company, reflects a proven and reliable approach to project delivery.

Community Focus
We’re committed to being good neighbors. From early development through long-term operations, we prioritize open communication with landowners, local officials, and community members. Through our Chaberton Cares program, we also reinvest in the communities where we develop projects by supporting local nonprofits.

Full-Service Partnership

From permitting and construction to ongoing maintenance and eventual decommissioning, Chaberton and its partners manage every phase of the project lifecycle, allowing you to focus on what matters most.

Frequently Asked Questions About Energy Storage

Energy storage systems consist of large battery units housed in weather-resistant containers arranged in rows. These batteries connect to existing electrical lines and operate through remote management software—charging when electricity demand is low and releasing stored power when demand peaks. The entire system is monitored from off site and requires minimal on-site maintenance.

Modern energy storage systems are designed with stringent regulations, certifications, and safety features, including fire suppression systems, thermal monitoring, and automatic shutdown capabilities. All BESS projects are designed to the latest National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 855 standards as well as other applicable federal, state, and local standards. During project development and installation, Chaberton engages directly with the local fire marshal to determine site-specific safety considerations that need to be addressed. We also work with local fire departments to develop training and safety plans. The battery technology we design with (lithium ion phosphate, or LFP) is the same proven technology found in electric vehicles and consumer electronics, scaled up for grid applications.

Energy storage systems are an important component of a reliable, modern electrical grid. They stabilize power quality by smoothing out fluctuations, support 24/7 energy availability by storing excess renewable energy for later use, reduce power outages and brownouts, help lower electricity costs for consumers, and reduce overall grid emissions by enabling more efficient energy distribution.

Energy storage projects are semi-permanent installations that provide landowners with a stable, long-term income stream. Our projects use screening methods such as natural landscape and/or opaque fencing to reduce impact to viewscapes. And at the end of the project’s lifecycle, we’ll restore your land at no cost to you.

Leasing to an energy storage developer offers unmatched benefits: generate substantial passive income for 17 years or more, require minimal land area (0.25 to 2 acres), involve zero day-to-day management on your end, contribute to community energy independence, and maintain flexibility for future land use decisions.
